IGP Egbetokun Seeks Deeper Legislative Partnership To Strengthen Nigeria’s Border Security

Nigeria Police chief Egbetokun calls for stronger executive–legislative collaboration to tackle border-related security threats.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to enhancing national border security through sustained collaboration with the National Assembly.

Egbetokun made this known while hosting members of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Border Security during a working visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the executive and legislative arms in addressing border-related security challenges.

Represented at the meeting by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Bzigu Yakubu Kwazhi, the IGP commended the lawmakers for their proactive engagement on border security issues.

He stressed that safeguarding Nigeria’s borders requires a collective and coordinated approach driven by strong institutional partnerships, shared intelligence and a unified national security vision.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the House delegation was led by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Isah Mohammed Anka, and included Hon. David Agada, Hon. Davidson Akinlayo Kolawole, Hon. Paul Gowon, Hon. Saba Ahmed Adamu, as well as the Committee Clerk, Mrs. Jemila Umar.

Speaking during the engagement, Hon. Anka reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening border security across the country.

He assured the police leadership of the lawmakers’ readiness to provide legislative backing, particularly in areas such as the deployment of modern surveillance technologies, improved welfare for officers deployed at border posts, and specialised training for the Border Patrol Force.

Also speaking, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Border Patrol Force, AIG Nemi Iwoh, lauded the committee for its sustained interest in border security matters.

He expressed optimism that the timely implementation of resolutions reached during the meeting would significantly enhance Nigeria’s border security architecture.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its resolve to protect the integrity of the nation’s borders and welcomed continued collaboration with the National Assembly and other relevant stakeholders in achieving sustainable national security outcomes.
