Former Ogun State governorship candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has declared that if he chooses to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027, he will not do so while remaining in the PDP.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, Showunmi said,

“If I am going to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for president in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I’ll leave and join his party. I don’t believe in the nonsense of saying you are in one party, are you wrong? No, I don’t do that kind of thing.”

He further hinted at deep dissatisfaction with the current state of the PDP, stating,

“No, no, no. I’m not in the party. You are. You are in the media. You can see what’s going on.”

Pressed on whether he might eventually decamp, Showunmi responded,

“There’s a very strong possibility that looking at what’s going on in my environment, looking at my state where I grew up, looking at my tribe and their own desires and my people, there’s a very, very strong possibility that I will more than likely leave.”

According to him, his delay in leaving the PDP was because he was hoping for signs of competent leadership from others,

“I delayed because I thought someone else would show me signs that they can not just want to win an election, but run the country.”

Showunmi also addressed criticism from fellow opposition figure Omoyele Sowore, who accused him of double speak and lacking resolve. In response, Showunmi said,

“That cheeky nonsense of Omoyele doesn’t make sense to me… I’ll keep encouraging him because he’s my brother… but I don’t have to be Yele. And Yele doesn’t need to have a meeting with me, it’s not important.”

Reflecting on his disappointment with Peter Obi’s political approach, Showunmi said,

“My greatest disappointment as we’re getting ready for 2027 was actually Peter… Peter Obi is his name.”

“I had hoped in all of his seriousness… that Peter will understand that we can move and challenge the status quo. Not the way he’s been doing it all by himself…”

He warned that time was running out for Obi to decide on his future political direction.

“If your mind is not made up by May 29th this year what you want to do, I’m going to be more inclined to support Asiwaju.”

Showunmi reiterated his desire for strategic succession planning and national unity, and emphasised that his political stance is based on what he sees as the best way to stabilize democracy in Nigeria.
