Hyundai To Build West Africa Automotive Plant In Ghana Under Korea Partnership

Ghana secures Hyundai manufacturing plant as South Korea expands investment and industrial cooperation in the country.

Ghana is set to host a Hyundai automotive manufacturing plant that will serve the West African market under a new partnership agreement with South Korea, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.

Ablakwa disclosed the development in a social media post on Monday after co-chairing the 2026 Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Korea alongside South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.

According to the minister, Ghana and South Korea are strengthening cooperation through initiatives focused on industrialisation, value addition and job creation, particularly for young people.

He said the two countries share a commitment to building a “mutually beneficial partnership” that supports economic growth and development.

Ablakwa noted that Ghana and South Korea already collaborate in sectors including energy, agriculture, maritime affairs, education, shipbuilding, road infrastructure and healthcare.

He revealed that both countries are advancing several major projects, including a new university in Ghana, a Hyundai automotive manufacturing facility and solar-powered irrigation systems.

“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana; establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Ghana and launch new solar irrigation systems,” he stated.

The minister said both countries had also agreed to expand cooperation into emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, energy and critical minerals.

“Additionally, we agreed to have collaboration in AI and new partnerships for energy and critical minerals,” he added.

Ablakwa further disclosed that discussions on a visa waiver arrangement between Ghana and South Korea were progressing, noting that diplomatic and service passport holders had already been covered while broader negotiations continued.

The announcement comes as Ghana and South Korea prepare to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations next year, with both countries expressing optimism about expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
