Hundreds of schools across France have been closed as students continue protests over poor conditions, including teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings.
The demonstrations began in Paris earlier this week before spreading to other parts of the country, with students demanding improvements to the education system.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray said 65 school staff members had been injured, including 40 headteachers, while 1,949 people were arrested on Thursday alone.
Police have used tear gas against some protesters in Brest in western France, while images from Paris showed a burnt pile of belongings outside a school entrance.
A 16-year-old protester in Rennes told journalists that the police response was making demonstrators “even angrier”.
Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, however, said the situation had escalated beyond student demonstrations into a public order disturbance.
Some of the protests have also resulted in injuries and property damage, with teenagers reportedly suffering eye injuries and one student losing his teeth.
The demonstrations come as pressure mounts on the French government over conditions in schools, while authorities face growing concerns over violence and disorder surrounding the protests.
