Hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin is donating $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), in what is being described as the largest gift in American higher education history.
The donation surpasses the $2 billion gift made by Phil and Penny Knight to Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute in 2025.
Griffin’s donation will be divided across three priorities.
Of the total, $500 million will support priorities at CMU’s Pittsburgh campus, while another $500 million will be dedicated to its School of Computer Science.
The school will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science.
The remaining $2 billion will fund the launch of a new CMU campus in Miami, Florida.
