‘He Did His Best Within His Capacity’: Peter Obi Pays Tribute to Late Former President Buhari in Daura

Peter Obi has paid last respects to Buhari, noting that the former president did his best within his capacity.

Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, has paid his respects to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari at his mourning ceremony in Daura, Katsina State on Wednesday, where he recalled a heartfelt moment during his campaign that has remained with him.

Speaking in an interview with ARISE News Obi reflected on the difficulty of arriving in Katsina due to flight restrictions caused by the high number of dignitaries attending the state funeral.

“Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights. Even if you have a flight, you can’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because there were a lot of dignitaries,” Obi said.

Despite the logistical challenges, Obi said his decision to attend the mourning was borne out of deep respect for the former president, whose legacy, he believes, was anchored on a genuine concern for the underprivileged.

“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That’s what I always remember,” Obi recalled. “And I believe he did his best within his capacity.”

Obi described Buhari as a leader who, despite criticism, made a sincere appeal for the welfare of the poor — a message he says continues to resonate with him.

“I remember vividly his sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor,” he said.

Reflecting on the brevity of life and the importance of legacy, Obi noted, “We have to all learn how to serve our country knowing that one day we will all be called back by our creator.”

The late president, who died in London on Sunday, was buried in Daura on Tuesday with full military honours.
