Guinea-Bissau’s main opposition leader, Domingos Simões Pereira, appears before a military court following allegations linking him to multiple coup attempts, according to judicial and military officials.
Pereira, who leads the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), the movement that guided the country to independence in 1974, faces renewed legal pressure months after his arrest during the November coup that removes President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. His detention comes just days after presidential elections.
Although authorities release him last month, Pereira remains under house arrest in connection with separate financial crime investigations. Military prosecutors now allege he plays a role in at least two attempted coups, reportedly occurring in late 2023 and October 2025.
Officials say the military court summons forms part of an ongoing effort to address repeated instability and alleged threats to constitutional order in the country.
