Google DeepMind and Google Cloud will provide up to 200 European researchers with access to advanced artificial intelligence models and $3 million in computing credits to support scientific discoveries.
The initiative, announced by the US technology company on Wednesday, will allow selected scientists to use Google’s AI-powered tools to investigate complex questions across various scientific fields.
The tools include AlphaFold 3, which predicts molecular structures and interactions; WeatherNext, which supports weather forecasting; AlphaGenome, which advances genomic research; AlphaEvolve, an AI system for developing and optimising algorithms; and AlphaEarth Foundations, which analyses information about the Earth’s environment.
Google said the programme would equip researchers with AI capabilities and computing resources to process large datasets, potentially improving the speed and efficiency of scientific investigations.
The tools could support studies into extreme weather patterns, molecular interactions and biological processes, helping scientists explore questions that require extensive data analysis and computational power.
Through the initiative, Google aims to expand the use of artificial intelligence in European scientific research by giving selected researchers access to technologies that might otherwise require significant computing resources.
The programme highlights the growing application of AI in scientific discovery, as researchers increasingly use advanced computational tools to analyse complex information, test ideas and develop new approaches to longstanding research challenges.
