A powerful explosion at a gas station in eastern Rome sent shockwaves through the city on Friday, injuring several people, including at least three who sustained severe burns, according to local media reports.
The blast occurred at a fuel distribution point on Via dei Gordiani, which handles petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The force of the explosion was so intense that it was reportedly heard across multiple districts of the Italian capital.
Local news outlet Roma Today published dramatic images showing thick plumes of smoke and towering flames billowing from the site. The cause of the explosion is yet to be confirmed, but emergency services responded swiftly, evacuating the area and treating the injured on site before transferring them to nearby hospitals.
In response to the incident, Rome’s public transport agency, Atac, announced the closure of the nearby Teano metro station, acting on police instructions to ensure public safety.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion. The incident has reignited concerns over safety protocols at fuel distribution centres in densely populated urban areas.
As of now, officials have not reported any fatalities, but the condition of the severely injured remains critical. Emergency teams continue to monitor the situation, with fire crews working to prevent further flare-ups and ensure the area is secure.
