Former South-East governors inaugurate new forum to advise leaders, with Peter Obi, Ohakim and Nnamani notably absent from meeting.
Former governors from Nigeria’s South-East have established a regional platform, the South-East Forum of Former Governors, to support and advise serving governors on key issues affecting the zone and the country.
The forum was inaugurated at a meeting attended by notable figures including Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Sullivan Chime, Chris Ngige, Okezie Ikpeazu, Dave Umahi, and Martin Elechi.
However, former governors Peter Obi, Ikedi Ohakim, and Chimaroke Nnamani were absent.
Speaking after the meeting, Umahi said the absences were due to medical trips abroad, expressing optimism that future gatherings would attract broader participation.
“The body is to support our serving governors and advise them on key zonal and national matters,” he said.
He noted that the forum is open to all former governors from the region, regardless of political affiliation, and is intended to foster unity and collaboration.
The former governors commended current leaders in the South-East for progress in infrastructure, security, and empowerment initiatives.
They also expressed appreciation to Bola Tinubu for federal appointments given to indigenes of the region and ongoing infrastructure projects nationwide.
Umahi added that the forum aligns with the position of serving South-East governors in supporting the president’s re-election, describing the move as strategic.
He disclosed that the next meeting would hold within two weeks, with Peter Mbah expected to brief the chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum ahead of wider consultations.
