Four people, including a New York City police officer, were killed when a gunman opened fire inside a Manhattan skyscraper housing the headquarters of the NFL and several financial firms, city officials confirmed on Monday.
The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, later turned the weapon on himself and died at the scene. He was believed to have acted alone.
Among the victims was 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who immigrated to the US from Bangladesh. Islam, described by Mayor Eric Adams as a “true blue” hero, had served with the police for over three years. He was a father of two, and his wife is expecting their third child.
Authorities said the attack began during the evening rush hour in the lobby of the Park Avenue skyscraper before Tamura took an elevator to the 33rd floor and continued his shooting spree in the offices of a management company. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the gunman used an assault-style rifle and had recently driven across the country to New York.
Details of the three other victims — two men and a woman — were not immediately released. A fifth victim, a man, sustained life-threatening injuries and was undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
Commissioner Tisch said there was no clear motive yet and confirmed the suspect had a history of mental illness but no significant criminal background.
Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, called the incident an attack by “pure evil” on innocent people and the officers sworn to protect them.
Images of the gunman entering the building with a rifle, reportedly shared by police, have been published by multiple media outlets.
