Fire Erupts At Russia’s Kirishi Oil Refinery After Reported Ukraine Strike Attempt

Fire erupted at Russia’s Kirishi oil refinery after a reported Ukrainian strike attempt, causing an industrial fire with no casualties.

Ukraine has attempted to attack one of Russia’s biggest oil refineries, sparking a fire in an industrial zone in the town of Kirishi in the Leningrad region, according to regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko.

“The enemy’s main target was the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery,” Drozdenko said, adding that there were no casualties as a result of the incident.

The Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery is considered one of Russia’s largest oil processing facilities. Industry sources say it processed around 17.5 million metric tons of oil in 2024, equivalent to roughly 350,000 barrels per day, accounting for about 6.6% of Russia’s total refining capacity.

The facility produces a wide range of petroleum products, including approximately 2 million tons of gasoline, 7.1 million tons of diesel, 6.1 million tons of fuel oil, and 600,000 tons of bitumen annually.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 289 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight, as cross-border attacks and counterattacks continue in the ongoing conflict.

Authorities say assessments of the damage in Kirishi are still ongoing, while security measures have been reinforced around critical energy infrastructure.
