Europe Must Resist Trump’s Policies To Avoid Being ‘Crushed,’ French PM Bayrou Warns

French PM François Bayrou has warned that Europe must unite against Trump’s policies to avoid domination and marginalisation.

French Prime Minister François Bayrou on Monday issued a stark warning about the potential impact of US President-elect Donald Trump’s policies on France and Europe, urging unified resistance to avoid being “crushed.”

Speaking during his New Year’s address in Pau, Bayrou criticised the United States for adopting what he described as an “extremely domineering form of politics,” driven by its economic and industrial strategies.

“The United States has decided to embark upon an extremely domineering form of politics, via the dollar, via its industrial policy, and via the fact that it can capture the world’s investments and research,” Bayrou told reporters.

He warned that failure to act would leave Europe vulnerable to domination and irrelevance. “If we don’t do anything, our fate is very simple—we will be dominated. We will be crushed. We will be marginalised,” he said.

Bayrou emphasised that France’s response to these challenges would be critical but stressed the need for a united European front. “How we react, that is a decision that lies solely with the French people and with Europe, because clearly, without Europe, we cannot do anything,” he added.

His remarks underscore growing concerns among European leaders about Trump’s economic and foreign policies, which they fear could undermine European interests and diminish the continent’s influence on the global stage.
