Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret over a series of social media posts he made about US President Donald Trump last week, as the once-close alliance between the two high-profile figures collapsed in dramatic fashion.
In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter and now owned by Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO acknowledged he had gone too far during the online spat.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,” Musk wrote on Wednesday.
The feud marks a stunning rupture in what had been a powerful political and business alliance. Musk and Trump had maintained a strong working relationship, particularly during Trump’s second term, when Musk was tapped to lead the Department of Government Efficiency—an office central to the administration’s sweeping cost-cutting and deregulation agenda.
Their partnership had not only elevated Musk’s political influence but also reinforced investor confidence in his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, both of which benefited from favorable federal policies and high-level access. However, tensions spilled into public view last week as Musk lashed out at Trump over what insiders described as “fundamental differences” in policy direction and leadership style.
