El-Rufai Returns To Court After Mother’s Burial, Drops Magistrate In N1bn Rights Suit

Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai resumes court appearances after mother’s burial, withdrawing magistrate from his N1bn suit.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has returned to the State High Court in Kaduna following the burial of his mother, Hajiya Umma. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had earlier released him after her passing on Friday.

El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, facing a 10-count charge relating to alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. His mother’s death was announced on X by her grandson, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, on Friday.

The former governor was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, which had adjourned his application for bail until March 31. Bashir El-Rufai, his son, confirmed that his father had been released from custody.

In a separate development, El-Rufai withdrew his fundamental rights enforcement suit against a magistrate in his N1bn claim before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The withdrawal followed concerns raised by the trial judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, over the failure to properly identify the magistrate sued as the second defendant.

Details on the outcomes of his bail application and the rights suit are expected to unfold in the coming days.
