The Lagos State Government and private sector partners have been praised following the successful staging of the inaugural Lagos Gran Fondo EKO 170 cycling race, described by organisers as a model for collaborative nation building.
In a press release titled “The EKO 170: A National Triumph, Forged in Partnership,” organisers said the event went beyond sport, positioning the 170km race as a demonstration of what coordinated governance and partnership can achieve.
“This past weekend, Lagos witnessed more than just a cycling race,” the statement said. “The inaugural Lagos Gran Fondo ‘EKO 170’ was a powerful testament to what can be achieved when visionary governance, engaged communities, dedicated athletes, and a coalition of forward thinking partners unite.”
According to the organisers, the event was designed to reflect broader national potential, noting that “the 170km event was not merely a sporting success; it was a masterclass in collaborative nation building, providing a replicable blueprint for excellence in Nigeria.”
The press release identified the Lagos State Government as central to the success of the race, stressing that official backing ensured smooth planning and execution.
“At the core of this achievement was the visionary backing of the Lagos State Government,” the statement said. “From the outset, the state’s endorsement provided the crucial framework of legitimacy, security, and inter agency coordination.”
Beyond government support, the organisers highlighted the role of corporate partners in delivering the event, describing their involvement as instrumental.
“This grand vision was made operational by a pioneering coalition of sponsors,” the statement said, adding that “the foundational support of Mikano International, Motors Division and Changan as Official Infrastructure Partner” played a key role in the staging of the race.
Organisers said the success of EKO 170 underscored the potential for future large scale sporting events in Nigeria when government, private sector partners and communities work together under a shared vision.
