‘Don’t Hand Power To Those Who Kneel’: Akpabio Warns Governors On Succession Plans

Akpabio has cautioned second-term governors against picking loyalists as successors, warning that subservience is not criteria for leadership.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a strong warning to governors, particularly those in their second terms, urging them to resist the temptation of handing power to loyalists who are not prepared for governance.

Speaking during the inauguration of the first 30-kilometre phase of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Akpabio emphasised that leadership must be earned through readiness and vision, not flattery or obedience.

“Do not give power to anybody who is not looking for power. Don’t go hiding in your heart that this boy is very subservient—he’s always kneeling down when he’s talking to me. The wife is always rolling on the floor. I think I should make this one the governor. If you do that, you are giving power to somebody who is not prepared for governance. And they will disappoint you,” Akpabio warned.

He described such decisions as the root of betrayal in politics and urged the current crop of progressive governors to safeguard the legacy of good governance by choosing successors who are competent and visionary.

Akpabio used the occasion to reiterate his support for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, citing his vision and execution of transformative infrastructure projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as evidence of purposeful governance.

“Things are getting better for Nigeria. For Asiwaju is on the throne,” he said, concluding with optimism for the future of the country under the current administration.
