Former federal lawmaker and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dino Melaye, has congratulated former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over his landslide victory at the party’s presidential primary, likening the triumph to Arsenal Football Club’s recent English Premier League success.
Melaye, who alongside Atiku is a known Arsenal supporter, made the comparison in a one-line post on X on Thursday following the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary held on Wednesday night.
“Oga you did it like Arsenal,” Melaye wrote.
Atiku emerged winner of the exercise after polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat two other contenders — former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Managing Director of the defunct FSB International Bank, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
The results were announced by the returning officer of the primary election, Tunde Ogbeha.
Amaechi secured 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen polled 177,120 votes.
With the victory, Atiku will be making his sixth attempt at the presidency in 2027. However, he has appeared on the ballot as a presidential candidate three times — in 2007, 2019 and 2023.
Melaye’s comparison appeared to reference Arsenal’s dramatic English Premier League title triumph on May 19, when the London club won its first league crown in 22 years after Manchester City dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
