Dickson Iroegbu: Tinubu Must Deliver Free, Fair, Credible 2027 Elections To Secure His Legacy

NDC’s Dickson Iroegbu says Tinubu must deliver free, fair and credible 2027 elections to secure his legacy, strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, (NDC), and political analyst, Mazi Nnamdi Dickson Iroegbu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027, saying the conduct of the polls will be crucial to securing his legacy.

Speaking in an interview on Arise News on Friday, Iroegbu criticised declining public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying the commission and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government must ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027 to restore trust and give President Tinubu a positive legacy.

“INEC owes itself a responsibility, and indeed the government of APC. The only chance they have to leave something behind—Tinubu’s government, the only chance he has to leave an opportunity to leave something behind that will speak for him in the future—is to conduct a free and fair election.

“Because so far, for the three-plus years that they’ve been in government, they’ve failed in every index that would give them any pass mark. So here is an opportunity for them to organize and ensure that there is a credible process in the 2027 election. That is what they can do for themselves to have a little name left behind. If not, there is nothing to remember them positively for.”

Commenting on the World Bank’s report that showed Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.2 per cent, while state revenues increased by 93 per cent in real terms between 2023 and 2025, Iroegbu said Nigerians should judge economic progress by their daily realities, including road safety, food affordability and access to basic medicines.

“If you go by the World Bank’s so-called report, what is important is that the report is in our stomachs. The report is on the streets: How safe are we to travel by road? That’s where the report is. How affordable is the food, basic drugs, and all of that? These are things that should matter to Nigerian people, not World Bank reports that can be planted by anyone.”

He also called on Nigerians to reject the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections, describing the party’s performance in government as damaging and urging an end to its administration.

“We say God forbid that APC should come back in 2027. These ruins, we have to call it to a halt in 2027. And by every means possible.”
