Despite Peace Deal, Rivers Speaker, 15 Others Abandon PDP For APC

APC State Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, was present in the Assembly chambers to witness the formal defection process.

Sixteen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, on Friday defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection marks a significant escalation in the state’s political realignments, coming just days after the lawmakers reconciled with Governor Siminalayi Fubara following months of a bitter power struggle.

During Wednesday’s Assembly proceedings, the lawmakers were seen on live television singing praises of President Bola Tinubu, pledging unwavering support for his leadership—while notably avoiding any mention of renewed closeness with Governor Fubara.

APC State Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, was present in the Assembly chambers to witness the formal defection process.

Those who moved to the APC include the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule; Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol; House Leader, Major Jack; Deputy House Leader, Linda Stewart; and lawmakers Wami Chile, Granville Wellington, among others.

More details are expected as the political implications unfold.
