Delta Police Deny Custodial Death Claim, Describe Report As Misleading

Delta Police have dismissed claims of a suspect dying in custody, insisting no casualty occurred during recent operations.

The Delta State Police Command has dismissed as false reports alleging that a suspect died in custody at Ekpan Police Station, describing the publication as misleading and unfounded.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the Command said the allegation was an attempt to undermine ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state.

The police stressed that no suspect died in custody in Ekpan or anywhere in Delta State, contrary to the claims.

According to the statement, the operation referenced in the report was a coordinated raid on criminal hideouts conducted on March 25 and 26, 2026.

The exercise, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, targeted criminal activities in Ughelli and Warri.

The Command disclosed that the operation led to the arrest of over 270 suspects, including suspected drug traffickers and wanted cultists, while large quantities of illicit drugs were recovered.

It added that all suspects were properly screened, with those found not culpable released, while others remain in custody in good condition.

The police emphasised that no casualty was recorded during the operation.

Describing the report as reckless, the Command warned that such misinformation could mislead the public, erode trust in law enforcement, and distract from ongoing efforts to combat crime.

While acknowledging the role of civic engagement, it cautioned against using activism or blogging to spread false information, warning that offenders would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents of continued efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.

The public was urged to disregard the report and rely on official channels for accurate information.
