Defence Secretary Hegseth Says US ‘Devastated’ Iran’s Nuclear Programme in Overnight Strikes

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says the US devastated Iran’s nuclear programmes in strikes targeting three key nuclear sites.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says the United States “devastated the Iranian nuclear programme” with its overnight strikes on three sites.

At a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth stated the operation was not aimed at regime change but reaffirmed that “President Trump has consistently stated for over 10 years that Iran must not get a nuclear weapon.”

He also revealed the US sent bombers over the Pacific as a decoy during the operation, and said American forces “did not come under fire.”

When asked by reporters about the potential reaction of US allies, Hegseth responded: “We have been respectful and working in collaboration with them.”

Addressing the possibility of future talks with Tehran, he said: “They know precisely what the American position is, what steps they can take to allow for peace, and I hope they do so.”

In the same Pentagon update, General Dan Caine confirmed that the US used 75 “precision guided” weapons in the strikes, including 14 “Massive Ordnance Penetrators”—also known as “bunker busters.”
