Dayo Sobowale: NURTW Crisis Reflects Breakdown Of Law And Threat To Public Order

The crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) is being linked to a broader breakdown of law and order, raising concerns about institutional failure and rising insecurity.

The ongoing leadership crisis in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has been described as a reflection of weakening respect for the rule of law, with fears that the situation could escalate into a wider threat to public order.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Tuesday, analyst Dayo Sobowale said recent developments surrounding the crisis point to deeper systemic issues within the country’s political and institutional framework.

Reacting to viral videos showing unrest at the union’s headquarters, he said, “this is the far-grey side of our political system,” suggesting that such incidents are a product of long-standing structural failures.

Sobowale warned that allowing the situation to persist without strict adherence to court rulings could embolden other groups to resort to similar actions. He cautioned that “I don’t know where this is going to stop,” highlighting the risk of escalating disorder if decisive action is not taken.

He stressed that while transport unions play a significant role in society, their activities must remain within legal boundaries. According to him, “they should not be allowed to get out of that,” emphasizing the need to maintain discipline and order.

The analyst also called for stronger institutional intervention, particularly from legal authorities, to ensure compliance with judicial decisions. He noted that “the Ministry of Justice is all part of government,” underscoring its responsibility in enforcing court judgments.

Sobowale further urged proactive measures to prevent violence and restore stability, stating that “people should be proactive and try and jump ahead” of potential disruptions.

He maintained that upholding the rule of law is critical to preserving public confidence and preventing further breakdown of order.
