ARISE News analyst Dayo Sobowale has warned that renewed allegations against President Bola Tinubu could damage Nigeria’s international image and create security concerns, particularly at a time when the United States is expressing support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE News, Sobowale criticised the revival of past allegations against the Nigerian president, arguing that the timing of the development could undermine Nigeria’s diplomatic and security interests.
“Our sovereign image is going to take a downfall because of this,” he said.
Sobowale said the development was particularly concerning because it came as the United States was showing support for Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.
“You are fighting terrorism and you have the support from a powerful person commending Nigeria, commending the same president. And then you have somebody resuscitating past allegations against the same Nigerian president.”
He described the development as damaging to Nigeria’s image and questioned the decision to revive the allegations at a time when the country requires international cooperation on security.
“So I feel some disgust as a Nigerian that we are watching our daughter-in-law in public, without taking due consideration of the security issues involved.”
Sobowale further described the development as a potential threat to national security, suggesting that the allegations could be part of efforts to undermine the current administration.
“I see what the article has done as the work of an enemy within. It is a threat to our security.”
He also stated that the controversy could expose the vulnerability of the government and place the responsibility on President Tinubu to defend his administration and presidency.
“But it is up to the President to show that he’s capable of defending his presidency and his tenure. That’s his problem.”
Sobowale concluded that while political criticism and dissent are part of democracy, such actions should not be pursued without considering their wider implications for Nigeria’s security, diplomacy and international reputation.
