The Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) 2025 Awards and Dinner Night celebrated African excellence as leading figures across entertainment, media, business, governance and culture were honoured at a glamorous ceremony in Lagos (See full list below).
The awards ceremony, held on Sunday night at The Library, Lagos, celebrated African excellence, leadership, creativity, and global impact. The event drew some of the continent’s most influential figures from entertainment, media, business, governance, culture, and innovation, highlighting Lagos’ growing reputation as a global hub for African achievement and diaspora engagement.
This year’s edition was especially notable as it marked the first time in eight years that the MIPAD platform hosted its prestigious awards in Lagos, reinforcing Nigeria’s role in connecting Africa to its worldwide diaspora.
Several high profile personalities were recognised during the night. Afrobeats superstar Davido was named Artist of the Year, while comedian Bovi Ugboma received Comedian of the Year. Arise News anchor Ojy Okpe was celebrated as News Anchor of the Year, and music icon D’banj won Music Platform of the Year for C.R.E.A.M. Popular media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu was honoured as Media Personality of the Year, and actress Juliet Ibrahim was awarded Actor of the Year (Female).
The film and movie categories drew strong attention, with Funke Akindele’s blockbuster Everybody Loves Jenifa winning Blockbuster Movie of the Year. Actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli’s Love in Every Word 1 & 2 was named Movie of the Year, reflecting the growing global influence of African storytelling. Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was celebrated as Author of the Year, adding literary prestige to the evening.
Other standout winners included Guinness World Record holder Hilda Baci, recognised as Guinness Record Holder of the Year (Female). Adewale Tinubu, Group Chief Executive of OANDO, was named Man of the Year, while Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, received CEO of the Year. Hannatu Musa Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, was honoured as Minister of the Year.
In media and lifestyle, Uche Pedro of BellaNaija was recognised as Lifestyle Personality of the Year, and RED Media was named Media House of the Year. The power couple Banky Wellington and Adesua Etomi-Wellington were celebrated as Power Couple of the Year (Faith), adding extra star power to the ceremony.
A notable highlight ahead of the event was the presentation of the MIPAD Governor of the Year 2025 Award to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a courtesy visit by the MIPAD delegation to Lagos House on December 18, 2025. He was recognised for his visionary leadership, transformative governance, and commitment to positioning Lagos as a leading global city for culture, innovation, tourism, and diaspora collaboration.
The Lagos awards night also served as the grand finale of the Lagos Diaspora Experience 2025, a week long celebration of African art, culture, innovation, and global connection. The week featured cultural showcases, business and leadership engagements, and diaspora focused events, all aimed at strengthening ties between Africa and its global community.
This year also marked the first time the Most Influential 100 Recognition and Awards Ceremony, traditionally held in New York alongside the United Nations General Assembly, was hosted in Nigeria, a milestone for the platform.
Speaking at the event, MIPAD Founder and Chairman Kamil Olufowobi described the Lagos edition as a defining moment: “For the first time, we’re bringing our world famous recognition platform home to celebrate excellence within the Global Africa family right here in Lagos. This is more than an event; it’s a movement uniting, connecting, and empowering Africans and people of African descent to collaborate and change the world.”
The ceremony also honoured the MIPAD Class of 2025, as well as past Nigerian recipients who were unable to attend their recognition ceremonies in New York, rounding off a memorable evening dedicated to African excellence, global impact, and diaspora connection.
