Court Adjourns Trial Of Anthony Joshua’s Driver As Prosecutor Seeks Legal Advice From Ogun DPP

Court adjourns case against driver as prosecutor seeks legal advice over crash involving Anthony Joshua in Ogun State.

A magistrate court has adjourned the trial of the driver involved in the crash that affected Anthony Joshua, as prosecutors move to obtain legal advice from the Ogun State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Kayode appeared before the court on Wednesday over allegations bordering on reckless driving. Prosecutor Kadiri informed the court that the case file has been forwarded to the Ogun DPP for review.

On January 20, Richard Nigiwe, counsel to the police, requested an adjournment to allow duplication of the case file and its transmission to the state attorney-general through the DPP for legal advice. Defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun opposed the request, arguing that three witnesses were present in court and the trial should proceed.

However, Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun ruled in favour of the prosecution, ordering that the matter be adjourned to March 17 and directing that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Ogun attorney-general.

Background

The development follows a fatal road crash on December 29, 2025, involving Joshua, a former world heavyweight boxing champion.

The SUV conveying Joshua and two close associates collided with a stationary truck around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State, while travelling from Lagos. Although Joshua survived with minor injuries, two of his associates Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami died in the accident.

Ghami served as Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer.

On December 31, 2025, Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash.
