‘Courageous Man Of God’: Tinubu Mourns Plateau Cleric Imam Abdullahi Abubakar

Tinubu mourns Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, who has died at 92, praising his bravery for sheltering Christians during Plateau’s 2018 communal violence.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Abdullahi Abubakar, who died at the age of 92.

Imam Abubakar gained national and international recognition in 2018 after risking his life to hide and protect more than 200 Christians during violent communal clashes in Plateau State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late cleric as an extraordinarily courageous religious leader whose life exemplified faith, compassion and reverence for human life.

Tinubu said that at a time when ethnic and religious divisions threatened social harmony, Imam Abubakar chose peace, humanity and conscience over fear and self-preservation.

According to the President, the Imam’s decision to protect those in danger, despite grave personal risk, underscored the true essence of faith and sent a powerful moral message beyond sermons or doctrine.

Tinubu noted that the cleric’s uncommon bravery earned him both local and international recognition, reflecting global appreciation for his commitment to peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony.

He urged religious and community leaders across the country to emulate Imam Abubakar’s example by promoting tolerance, mutual respect and unity among people of different backgrounds.

The President prayed for the repose of the Imam’s soul and asked God to reward him for his courage, benevolence and lifelong service to humanity.
