Constance Ikokwu: Credible Nigerians Must Join Politics To Drive Change In Nigeria

Journalist and politician Constance Ikokwu says credible Nigerians must enter politics to drive change, citing leadership gaps and public frustration.

Journalist turned politician Constance Ikokwu, has stressed the need for credible Nigerians to actively participate in politics, arguing that meaningful change will only occur when responsible citizens step forward to lead.

Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Thursday to discuss her political aspirations, Ikokwu described her transition from journalism to active politics as a journey rooted in purpose and a desire to move beyond merely criticising the state of the nation. She challenged the widespread belief that politics is inherently dirty, insisting that such perceptions persist because well-meaning individuals often refuse to get involved.

She said, “If all the good people stand aside, then of course, the wrong people will take over.”

Reflecting on her career, Ikokwu described journalism as a deeply fulfilling profession that shaped her sense of purpose through amplifying voices, informing the public, and holding power to account.

She also acknowledged the role of media leadership in her journey, noting that opportunities and support helped her grow and thrive in the profession.

Explaining her move into politics, Ikokwu said her experiences abroad exposed widespread frustration among Nigerians about the country’s state, but minimal efforts to address its challenges.

According to her, “Why do we complain and do literally nothing? Is it not better to find practical solutions?”

She noted that pursuing a doctoral degree further clarified her sense of purpose, prompting deep reflection about her role and where she could make the most impact.

Ikokwu said she chose to return to Nigeria despite opportunities abroad, emphasising her desire to contribute directly to addressing challenges facing the country and the African continent.

“I had to go where the problems were… where I would be most useful to the people,” she said.

On her choice of political platform, Ikokwu explained that shifting political dynamics in the Southeast influenced her decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which she described as an emerging coalition of diverse voices.

She, however, acknowledged the uncertainty within Nigeria’s political landscape, noting that developments remain unpredictable.

“I am not a soothsayer… you never know what will happen tomorrow,” she said.

Ikokwu added that, in the absence of independent candidacy in Nigeria, aspiring leaders must work within existing political parties, expressing hope that her chosen platform will provide the opportunity to represent her people effectively.

She further highlighted evolving political alignments in Anambra State, observing that traditional party strongholds are gradually shifting, with increasing competition for public support.

Ikokwu maintained that sustained engagement, credible leadership, and responsiveness to citizens’ needs will be critical for any political party seeking relevance and trust among the people.

Addressing questions on Anambra State politics, Ikokwu said the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) remains influential but geographically limited.

“APGA is largely confined to Anambra State in its current form,” she said, adding that although the party has historically maintained a strong presence in the state, “its influence is gradually declining.”

She further noted that shifting political alliances are reshaping the region’s landscape, pointing out that APGA’s influence is increasingly challenged by national-level realignments and voter movement linked to high-profile political figures.

Ikokwu also observed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has minimal grassroots presence in Anambra, describing it as “literally non-existent” in terms of local followership.

She maintained that political relevance in the state will depend on parties’ ability to deliver results and earn public trust, as voter loyalties continue to evolve.
