Colombian Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe, who was shot in the head during a campaign event two months ago in an attack that shocked the nation, has died at the age of 39. His death was confirmed in a statement by his wife, María Claudia Tarazona.
Uribe had spent nine weeks in hospital, undergoing multiple surgeries in a bid to save his life. Over the weekend, doctors reported a worsening condition, citing severe bleeding in the brain. Despite intensive medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have arrested four people in connection with the shooting, including a 14-year-old boy identified as the gunman. While prosecutors have not disclosed a motive, all four suspects have been charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.
The three adults — Carlos Eduardo Mora, Katerine Martínez, and William González — also face charges for using a minor to commit a crime.
Uribe’s assassination has intensified concerns over political violence in Colombia ahead of the presidential election. The attack not only removed a prominent figure from the political stage but also reignited debate over the safety of candidates and the influence of criminal groups in electoral politics
