China-Based Espionage Groups Hacked Guatemala’s Foreign Ministry System, US Embassy Says

China-based hackers infiltrated Guatemala’s Foreign Ministry system, US reveals after joint cybersecurity review

The United States embassy in Guatemala announced on Tuesday that cyber espionage groups based in China had hacked into the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry’s computer system.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the embassy revealed that the breach was uncovered during a joint cybersecurity review conducted with the Guatemalan government and the US Southern Command. The investigation aimed to strengthen the Central American nation’s digital infrastructure against growing cyber threats.

While specific details about the nature and extent of the breach were not disclosed, the revelation underscores rising concerns over state-sponsored cyber activities targeting government institutions around the world.

Neither the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry nor Chinese officials have publicly responded to the allegations. However, the incident is likely to add to the mounting tensions between China and Western-aligned countries over cybersecurity and digital espionage.

The United States has repeatedly accused China of engaging in cyber-espionage campaigns against foreign governments, businesses, and infrastructure, allegations that Beijing has consistently denied.
