Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged unwavering support for Ukraine during his first in-person meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy since taking office. The meeting took place in Rome on Saturday, ahead of the inaugural mass of newly elected Pope Leo at the Vatican.
“Canadian people will stand in steadfast and unwavering support … we underscore that there can be no peace without the full support and participation of Ukraine, and that you have our absolute support,” Carney told Zelenskiy during their talks.
The meeting marked a significant diplomatic moment as Carney reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia.
In addition to his meeting with Zelenskiy, Prime Minister Carney also held bilateral talks with key global leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. These discussions come in the lead-up to the G7 summit, which will be hosted by Canada in June.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders on Monday, signalling a renewed diplomatic effort from Washington.
Carney’s statements and engagements in Rome underscore Canada’s continued role in supporting Ukraine on the global stage and maintaining strong ties with European allies.
