Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly dismissed suggestions by U.S. President Donald Trump that Canada would benefit from becoming the 51st American state, declaring that “Canada is not for sale.”
The remarks followed a surprising statement from President Trump earlier on Tuesday in which he floated the idea during a press briefing at the White House.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the US remained open to deepening ties with Canada and insisted that the country’s refusal to entertain the notion of statehood would not affect ongoing bilateral discussions.
“We’re going to be friends with Canada,” Trump said, downplaying the diplomatic tension stirred by the remark.
The suggestion comes amid renewed trade friction between the two nations, including disputes over tariffs and resource access. Prime Minister Carney responded swiftly, stressing Canada’s sovereignty and national pride.
