Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed that Canada will remain locked in a trade war with the United States for the foreseeable future, following what he described as a “colourful” phone call with then-President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Thursday, Trudeau reiterated Canada’s commitment to challenging US tariffs and engaging with senior Trump administration officials in an effort to have the measures lifted.
“I can confirm that we will continue to be in a trade war that was launched by the United States for the foreseeable future,” Trudeau stated.
In response to US tariffs, Canada swiftly imposed retaliatory measures, including a 25% tariff on C$30 billion worth of American imports. Trudeau made it clear that these countermeasures would remain in place until the US government reversed its trade actions.
The trade dispute has raised concerns among businesses and policymakers on both sides of the border, with many hoping for a diplomatic resolution to ease economic tensions between the two nations.
