Manchester United bounced back from their opening-day defeat to Hull City with a commanding 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, inspired by a brilliant hat-trick from captain, Bruno Fernandes.
Ipswich started brightly and took the lead in the 29th minute when Leif Davis finished after Abdul Fatawu created the opening. United responded before the break, with Fernandes finding the equaliser to send the sides into halftime level.
United took control after the interval. An Ipswich own goal put the hosts ahead before Fernandes converted a penalty to make it 3-1. The Portuguese midfielder then completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, underlining his influence on a dominant second-half display.
Bryan Mbeumo added United’s fifth goal after being involved in Fernandes’ third, while Ipswich substitute, Chuba Akpom scored a late consolation. The visitors had shown plenty of promise early on but struggled to contain United once the hosts found their rhythm.
The victory gives Michael Carrick’s side their first Premier League win of the season and provides a strong response to last weekend’s disappointing defeat. Fernandes, meanwhile, emerged as the clear star of the afternoon with three goals and an assist.
