BREAKING: Nigeria’s Defence Minister Badaru Resigns

Mohammed Badaru Abubakar steps down amid Nigeria’s new security emergency, ending his 15-month tenure as Defence Minister.

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.

In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the former Jigawa State governor formally tendered his resignation, ending his tenure 15 months after he joined the federal cabinet.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his contributions to national security and public service. The President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement later in the week.

Badaru, 63, served as Jigawa State governor between 2015 and 2023 before joining the Tinubu administration as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.

His exit comes as President Tinubu recently declared a nationwide security emergency, with the administration preparing to outline further measures aimed at strengthening defence operations across the country.
