Director Ryan Coogler has announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Black Panther 3 will open in cinemas on 15 December 2028, with David Jonsson cast as T’Challa’s grown son, a character first introduced in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
According to Coogler, T’Challa comes of age in the new film with his eyes set on the throne of Wakanda. The filmmaker also revealed that Black Panther 3 will become the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film.
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is also part of the cast, as previously announced.
Released in 2018, Black Panther grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide and won three Academy Awards. The film made Chadwick Boseman a global star in the role of Wakanda’s king and protector, T’Challa. Boseman died from cancer in August 2020, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever explored the aftermath of his character’s death. The 2022 sequel earned $859 million at the global box office and won an Academy Award for Ruth E. Carter’s costume design, making her the first Black woman to win two Oscars.
Jonsson is no stranger to Hall H, having appeared at Comic-Con for two recent films, The Long Walk, directed by Francis Lawrence, and Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez. During the panel, Coogler introduced the actor by highlighting his performance in The Long Walk, where he stars alongside Cooper Hoffman in the Stephen King adaptation about two young men who form an unlikely friendship during a deadly endurance contest.
Coogler was joined on stage by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, returning Black Panther stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, as well as Jonsson. His character, Toussaint, also known as T’Challa II, was introduced by Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia in the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever post-credits scene, which concluded with Rihanna’s Oscar-nominated song “Lift Me Up.”
Beyond the Marvel franchise, Jonsson has also appeared as Gus Sackey in HBO’s Industry and starred as Dom in the critically acclaimed 2023 romantic comedy Rye Lane.
