Bauchi Mourns Again As Lawmaker Mohammad Wanzam Dies, Day After Ex-Deputy Governor’s Passing

Bauchi loses serving lawmaker Mohammad Wanzam less than 24 hours after former deputy governor Audu Sule-Katagum’s death.

A serving member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, representing Sakwa Constituency, Mohammad Wanzam, is dead.

Wanzam, who died on Sunday morning, after a brief illness, was, untill his death, the chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Appropriation.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the death of a former deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Audu Sule-Katagum, who died at the age of 69.

Sule-Katagum, a one-time Chief of Staff, served as deputy governor of Bauchi State between 2018 and 2019 during the administration of former Governor Mohammed Abubakar.

The Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Sulaiman, who announced the death in a terse statement through his Spokesman, Mukhta Kobi, said the deceased discharged his responsibilities with diligence, dedication and commitment.

The Speaker also described the late lawmaker as a committed public servant who served his constituency and the state to the best of his ability.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, I announce the passing of a member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly representing Sakwa Constituency, Hon. Mohammad Wanzam,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said he received with profound shock and deep sorrow the news of the death of the lawmaker.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, the Gover said that the late lawmaker’s life was characterized by simplicity, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his constituents and the development of Bauchi State.

“On behalf of his family, the Government and the good people of Bauchi State, Governor Bala Mohammed extends his heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Sakwa Constituency, Katagum Emirate Council , the Bauchi State House of Assembly, and all those affected by this painful loss.

“The Governor describes late Hon. Wanzam Mohammad Zaki as a dedicated lawmaker, a humble leader, and a committed public servant whose life was characterized by simplicity, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his constituents and the development of Bauchi State.

“Governor Bala Mohammed notes that throughout his service in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Wanzam distinguished himself through diligence, maturity, and patriotism, particularly in his role as Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, where he contributed significantly to the formulation and oversight of policies and programmes aimed at improving the lives of the people.”

The Media Aide quoted his principal as saying: “His death is a great loss not only to his family and constituents but also to the entire Bauchi State. We have lost a dependable legislator, a bridge-builder, and a man whose humility and dedication earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike.”

While mourning this great loss, Governor Bala Mohammed urges the people of Bauchi State to take solace in the worthy legacy of service, commitment, and selflessness that the late lawmaker leaves behind.

“The Governor prayed that the Almighty Allah (SWT) will forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give his family, associates, the people of his Constituency and Bauchi State the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss,” Gidado added.

He said the funeral prayer for the deceased is scheduled to hold today, Sunday, 21st June 2026, at the Gwallaga Jumma’at mosque, Bauchi by 1:00 pm.
