At Least 48 Killed in Israeli Airstrikes on Northern Gaza as UN Warns of ‘Genocide Risk’

At least 48 Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed in Israeli strikes as UN warns of looming genocide in Gaza.

At least 48 Palestinians were killed overnight in a wave of Israeli airstrikes targeting northern Gaza, according to a local hospital.

The attack struck multiple homes and a refugee camp in the town of Jabalia, with medical sources in an Indonesian hospital reporting that 22 children and 15 women were among the dead.

Footage shared online showed scenes of devastation and what appeared to be over a dozen bodies lying on the floor. The Israeli military said it was reviewing the reports, stating that warnings to evacuate Jabalia and nearby towns had been issued Tuesday night after Palestinian militants launched rockets into Israel.

The latest escalation comes amid growing international alarm. Speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the UN’s humanitarian affairs chief, Tom Fletcher, called on the Security Council to act to “prevent genocide” in Gaza. He accused Israel of “deliberately and unashamedly imposing inhumane conditions on civilians” and urged an end to the 10-week blockade.

Fletcher also criticized the Israeli-US initiative to control humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, arguing that it undermines neutral assistance. In response, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon told the council that foreign aid was being diverted to support Hamas’s military operations.

On the diplomatic front, US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Adam Boehler announced plans to travel to Qatar for renewed ceasefire and hostage release negotiations. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to expand the offensive if Hamas fails to release the remaining 58 hostages.

In southern Gaza, at least 28 people were killed Tuesday in a massive Israeli airstrike on the European hospital’s compound. Israeli media reported the target was Mohammed Sinwar, who reportedly assumed leadership of Hamas in Gaza after his brother Yahya was killed last year. The Israeli military described the operation as a “precise strike” against a Hamas command centre located beneath the hospital.

Since the start of Israel’s military campaign in response to the deadly October 7 Hamas attacks, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reports that more than 52,900 people have been killed.
