A member of the Rivers Elders Forum, Chief Asukewe Ikoawaji, has described efforts by opposition parties to form a united coalition ahead of the 2027 elections as a national rescue mission, insisting it is not driven by individual political ambition.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Monday, Ikoawaji addressed concerns about rivalry among opposition figures, maintaining that the coalition is focused on addressing Nigeria’s current challenges.
“It’s not an ambition issue… it is a rescue mission to rescue Nigeria.”
He explained that while political ambition is natural, the present situation requires leaders to prioritize national interest above personal goals.
According to him, the coalition is aimed at improving governance and restoring better living conditions for Nigerians.
“We are not talking about individual as a person; we are talking about Nigerians.”
Ikoawaji argued that governance must be centered on service delivery, adding that failure to meet public expectations creates the need for change.
“The essence of being in governance… is to serve your people.”
He stressed that Nigerians have the right to demand accountability from leaders who fail to deliver on their promises.
“When you cannot deliver… the people has a right to make a change.”
Addressing fears of internal conflict, he said consultations are ongoing to ensure unity among opposition stakeholders.
“Let everybody drop his ambition and let us come together… we have done it before, we can still do it again.”
He added that the movement goes beyond visible political actors, describing it as a broader national effort.
“Everybody should see it as a project Nigeria.”
Ikoawaji concluded that the coalition will continue to grow, urging Nigerians to support what he described as a constructive and peaceful push for national recovery.
“The movement of opposition is a welcome movement… Nigerians people should listen to us.”
