Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi, has revealed his preference to test his popularity with delegates at the forthcoming All Progressives Congress presidential primary slated for May 29-30 in Abuja, rather than a possible consensus arrangement which the APC considers as an option.

Fayemi who was a guest on ARISE TV’s Morning Show stressed that the consensus mode of choosing candidates is democratic, as long the process is fair.

“Consensus is provided for in the APC constitution, as well as direct and indirect elections,”” Fayemi said. “Once you get the buy-in of all aspirants, and they agree on one person to be the candidate representing the party, there is nothing anti-democracy about that,”” Fayemi said.

“However, I would prefer for us to have a competition that will allow members of the party to examine competing visions.”

Fayemi said he’s not aware that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a member of the APC, and believes party leader Bola Tinubu won’t feel a sense of betrayal that many of his associates are competing with him for the party ticket.

“Asiwaju is a democratic, I don’t think Asiwaju will feel any sense of betrayal that any of us are offering competing visions for the betterment of Nigeria.”

Fayemi admitted that he would like to be the governors’ consensus candidate if they deem it fit. “I believe I have a very robust and warm relationship with all the governors, regardless of their party.”
