Algeria Survive DR Congo Scare As Extra Time Strike Seals AFCON Quarter Final Against Nigeria

Algeria score a last-gasp extra-time winner to beat DR Congo 1-0 and set up a quarter-final clash with Nigeria at AFCON.

In one of the most dramatic finishes of this Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria edged the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 after extra time to reach the tournament quarter-finals in Morocco on Tuesday night.

Adil Boulbina’s sensational strike in the 119th minute broke a cagey deadlock and sent Algeria into a high-stakes showdown with Nigeria next.

The tense Round of 16 tie at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was characterised by tactical discipline and limited clear chances across 90 minutes, with both sides cancelling one another out in regulation. Neither team could find the breakthrough despite spirited spells.

Algeria controlled possession and created openings but were repeatedly denied, while DR Congo’s resilient defence and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi kept the contest level.

Extra time threatened to deflate into a penalty shoot-out until Boulbina, introduced off the bench, latched onto a perfect pass from Ramiz Zerrouki. The 22-year-old cut inside and unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner with only minutes remaining, sparking wild celebrations among Algerian supporters.

The victory continues Algeria’s strong run in the tournament and extends their unbeaten streak, advancing them to face Nigeria in the quarter-finals. DR Congo’s campaign ends in heartbreak after a gritty and determined performance, but their fans will remember the team’s spirit and the tournament’s emotional moments.
