Ado-Ekiti Flood Claims Lives, Damages Infrastructure As Oyebanji Mourns Victims

Flooding in Ado-Ekiti claims lives, collapses Afao Bridge and disrupts movement as Governor Oyebanji sympathises with victims’ families.

The devastating flood that swept through parts of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, claiming lives, damaging infrastructure and disrupting movement, has drawn the sympathy of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who has called for urgent collective action to tackle the recurring environmental challenge.

The governor, who expressed deep sadness over the incident, sympathised with the families of the victims and assured residents that his administration would intensify efforts to address ecological problems responsible for flooding across the state.

The incident, which affected areas including Elemi Bridge, Afao Road and Ayemi Bridge, reportedly resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of roads and disruption of vehicular movement.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ekiti State Command, while assessing the situation, confirmed that floodwaters had caused serious damage in the affected areas and warned residents against taking dangerous risks during heavy rainfall.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Akinwumi Jegede, said personnel from the NSCDC Disaster and Emergency Management Unit had been deployed to flood-prone locations to cordon off dangerous areas, sensitise residents and motorists, and prevent further loss of lives and property.

Jegede disclosed that the Afao Bridge had collapsed completely, cutting off vehicular movement between Ado-Ekiti and Afao community, while the overflow around Elemi Bridge caused significant disruption and heavy traffic congestion.

He said the command was working with other emergency and security agencies to safeguard residents and manage the situation.
