Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress NDC, has reaffirmed his commitment to take on those who manipulate elections, affirming that his camp will “rig those who rig” the 2027 polls.
Obi said this at an NDC townhall meeting in Akwanga local government area of Nasarawa State, where he outlined his plans to tackle electoral malpractice and ensure accountability if elected president.
The former Anambra State governor explains that his administration would enforce the rule of law without discrimination, emphasizing that no individual would be above the law, regardless of position or status.
His words, “Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it.”
“Under my watch, Nigeria must be a country that has a law and votes from number one person to the last person must obey the rule of law. Nobody will be above the law. Nobody will behave rascally,” he added.
He, however, promised to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system to prevent manipulation and ensure that anyone who interfered with the electoral process faced the consequences.
“And let me assure you, number two, if elected the president of Nigeria, nobody will rig the election in this country again,” he concluded.
He explained that the major problem with the subsidy regime was not the policy itself but the corruption associated with its implementation.
He also challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give a full account of the funds generated from the removal of fuel subsidy since May 29, 2023.
The NDC candidate further criticised Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, alleging that the President had travelled abroad more than any other Nigerian president.
Obi, who is campaigning alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, maintained that his administration would place education at the centre of national development, with emphasis on improving access, quality and skills acquisition for young Nigerians.
He also pleged an inclusive government that would ensure persons with disabilities were not marginalised but given equal opportunities to participate meaningfully in governance and economic activities.
On basic amenities, the former Anambra
state governor reiterated his commitment to improve access to essential public services and infrastructure to enhance citizens’ welfare and living standards.
Earlier, the NDC Chairman in Nasarawa State, Dogo Shammah, welcomed Obi, his running mate, Dr Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other party leaders to the state.
Shammah applauded supporters for their turnout, describing the forum as an opportunity for the party to connect directly with the people and present its vision.
He solicited for unity, commitment and collective support among party members as the NDC prepares for the election.
