At least 17 people have been killed following an attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State during Easter celebrations.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Mbalom, where suspected armed assailants reportedly stormed the community, opened fire on residents, and set several houses ablaze. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attack happened without warning, leaving many dead, others missing, and several residents displaced.
Residents said at least 17 bodies have been recovered, while search efforts continue in nearby bushes for others who remain unaccounted for. Homes and properties were also destroyed during the assault, forcing survivors to flee the area.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the situation, saying: “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”
The attack has heightened concerns over recurring violence in parts of Benue State, particularly in rural communities where residents have faced repeated assaults by suspected armed groups. Witnesses said families fled into surrounding areas as gunshots rang out across the community.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, conveyed Governor Hyacinth Alia’s reaction, describing the attack as “heinous” and unacceptable.
“Benue state Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia strongly condemns the heinous attack carried out by suspected armed herdsmen on the peace-loving people of Mbalom in the Gwer-East Local Government Area,”
“The Governor describes the barbaric act as unacceptable, and a direct affront to the collective peace and security of the state. He expresses deep sympathy to families affected by the attack and assures them that the government stands firmly with them in this difficult time.”
The governor also noted a pattern of what he described as “calculated and selective attacks” in parts of the state and pledged to strengthen security measures to prevent further violence.
He further commended security agencies for their response and urged them to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and prevent future occurrences. Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
Sunday’s attack reflects similar patterns of violence, including killings, arson, and displacement, raising ongoing concerns about security and protection for vulnerable communities in the state.
