At least one hundred and thirty-four persons have been apprehended in Nasarawa State for violating sanitation laws.
Dr. Margaret Elayo, Commissioner for Environment, Solid Minerals and Mining, made revelation while addressing journalists immediately after the sanitation exercise on Saturday in Lafia, the state capital.
The environment commissioner, represented by the General Manager of the Nasarawa State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Iliya Yusuf-Adeka, therefore, explained that the exercise recorded high compliance in the month of September.
He said that there was improved compliance compared to last month, particularly among tricycle operators.
His His words, “As you observed, there was little compliance last month, where most of the tricycle riders who violated sanitation laws were arrested.
“Today, none of them came out. That is why we have few defaulters and generally, the exercise was smooth because of massive compliance by the general public.”
She, therefore, urged the residents of the state to make sanitation a daily habit and not only on sanitation days.
“This sanitation has been on for seven years now. Every day is supposed to be a sanitation day.
“Market operators and motor parks should sweep their environment and do all necessary cleaning before opening for business. Our environment must be adequately protected for the overall health of us all,” she added.
Earlier, Dr Abubakar Muhammad, Chief Prosecuting Officer of the sanitation courts in the state, said 26 persons were arraigned in Lafia while 134 persons were arrested statewide for violating sanitation laws.
“We have a lot of compliance, and when you look at the environment, you can see just a few tricycles are here. About 26 people have been arraigned before this court, and across the 13 local governments, 134 people were arrested for violating sanitation laws,” he stated.
Muhammad, while admonishing citizens to the state to desist from violating environmental laws, urged them to join hands to keep Nasarawa State clean and healthy for the overall health of the people.
